With the goal of promoting citizen science for the conservation of shorebirds, on September 6 and 7, 2018 the first workshop “Use of eBird” was held in Ensenada.

In this theoretical and practical workshop on citizen science, different topics related to the generalities of birds were addressed: the importance of Bahía de Todos Santos for shorebirds, the identification of birds using the mobile app Merlin, the use of the platform eBird and its importance for the knowledge and conservation of birds.

The information learned during the lectures at Cervecería Transpeninsular (a local brewery from Ensenada) was put into practice during the field trip at the shorebird reserve Bahía de Todos Santos, where the eBird app was used to register birds, and the app Merlin was used to identify them correctly.

Twenty-three guests participated in the workshop and the instructors were Vicente Rodríguez from Conabio, Enrique Zamora from the club Los Correcaminos, and Jonathan Vargas from Terra Peninsular.

This event was made possible thanks to the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), Transpeninsular Brewery, the National Commission for Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (Conabio in Spanish), the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN) and Terra Peninsular. Also, this event is part of the “Entre Peninsulares” collaboration.
