In addition to planning your trip it’s important to know how to camp without leaving a trace and that is what the second of the seven Leave No Trace principles is about.

How to travel and camp without leaving a trace? Selecting an appropriate campsite is the most important aspect of a low-impact outing. Always remember that the right places to set up camp are found, not built.

Remember that the principles are a guide to enjoy natural areas without damaging them and are very useful when you go for a walk on the beach, in the woods, when you go hiking or camping.

Tips

  1. Walk on marked trails and paths, if you go off a trail you can crush burrows, plants, and insects, as well as risk getting lost.
  2. Avoid propagating plants that don’t belong to the natural environment and that we sometimes carry on the soles of our shoes.
  3. The most important thing: leave the place where you camped as you found it or even better.
  4. The best places to camp are those where there is no vegetation.
  5. Camp at least 70 meters from water sources (rivers, lakes, basins, etc.), thus allowing animals to get close to drinking water without disturbing them. Don’t use soap if you are in a canyon as it can contaminate the water.
  6. Use the established campsites, this way you avoid damaging the vegetation and the area stays protected. Use the established campsites, this way you avoid damaging the vegetation and the area stays protected.

What to do in less frequented places?

  • Use different routes so as not to cause erosion or create new trails.
  • Don’t set up camps for several days.
  • Avoid using places recently used for camping, or where some type of impact is beginning to be noticed.
  • Install the tents at a good distance from each other.
  • The kitchen should be put on the hardest surface that can be found.
  • For cooking, campfires are not the best option. There are camping stoves that are small and lightweight.
