Birds Bring Us Together

The San Quintín Bay Bird Festival is an annual event organized by Terra Peninsular to celebrate and promote the conservation of migratory and resident birds in the region. The bay is a key site along the Pacific Flyway, hosting thousands of birds each year. The festival also promotes sustainable tourism and strengthens the community’s connection to nature.

Festival de las Aves de la Bahía de San Quintín

History

The first Bird Festival took place in 2015 in La Chorera, a community near the Punta Mazo Natural Reserve. It was a small event aimed at the local community, where they learned about birds through various activities.

With the goal of reaching more people, each year the festival has been growing and expanding its offerings. To date, more than 1,000 people from Baja California and the United States have attended the festivals and learned about the importance of protecting the birds of San Quintín.

Festival and local Community

The San Quintín Bay Birding Festival is more than a bird watching event; it is a gathering point between the community and nature. Since its conception, it has encouraged the active participation of local residents, visitors, researchers, and organizations, raising awareness about the importance of conserving the bay's ecosystems. Thanks to the community's commitment, the festival has grown each year, generating a positive impact on environmental education and the development of sustainable tourism in the region.

Branta negra San Quintín

The arrival of Birds at San Quintín

Each year, San Quintín Bay receives thousands of migratory birds that travel along the PacificFlyway, making it a vital refuge for resting, feeding, and breeding. These species travel long distances from North America and other regions, finding in the wetlands and coasts of San Quintín an ideal ecosystem. The arrival of the birds is an impressive natural phenomenon that emphasizes the importance of conserving these habitats to maintain ecological balance and protect these species.

In 2019, we received the Partners in Flight Award in recognition of efforts in land bird habitat management, conservation, and restoration, as well as for the community engagement model and design of the San Quintín Bay Bird Festival. The festival has been key in connecting the community with birds and their habitats, promoting environmental education and sustainable tourism in the region.

“Attending the Bird Festival changed the way I think and the way I see the world we live in. I’ve met people from different parts of the world that come to celebrate and enjoy nature, learn to take care of birds, the names of species, where they live and how important it is to respect them.
